The younger Verkhovensky is Peter, Petrusha, Petrushka, a wandering jester without a family without a tribe, a petty intriguer, an evil cunning trickster, a deceiver of simpletons, who laughs at the results of his tricks. Petrusha is received with honors and pathos, and he is happy to have fun in such a fertile field, to have fun cruelly and sometimes bloody, destroying everything that at least somehow designates his past. Dostoevsky's novel is a comprehensive evil satire, a mockery of the emptiness of ideological cries, the falsity of a provincial gloss, the multiplying general deceit, unfounded claims, the insignificance of thought. In the empty space of the stage, Roman Gabria opens a booth in front of the audience, turning the terrible into funny, demons into clowns, monsters into caricatures. The actors are given exaggerated comic make-up, parodic extravagant plasticity, deliberate intonations, grotesque mise-en-scenes. Theatricalization of the world, reality, being - such is the way of reading Dostoevsky's text in the play, an unexpected and bold look at the Russian classic.
