KARENIN
The premiere took place on December 12, 2020
Ussuriysk \ Drama Theatre. Komissarzhevskaya
The play of the modern playwright Vasily Sigarev is interesting in that it highlights a completely different storyline for the viewer, which usually remains hardly noticeable when reading a novel. This is the story of Alexei Aleksandrovich Karenin, Anna's husband, who has his own view of the ongoing tragedy and his own spiritual torment. But Tolstoy would not have been a great writer if he had not encoded in the extremely simple plot of a love triangle the deeper meaning and reflections that Roman Gabria, together with the actors of the V.F. Komissarzhevskaya is being revealed now in the process of rehearsals.
- I would not single out any general line “what the performance is about,” the director says, “but, probably, one of them is the theme of forgiveness based on Christian morality, about which we often say beautiful words aloud, but in reality we cannot forgive a person. How curious, first of all, the spiritual path a person goes through in order to stop talking about forgiveness and start forgiving! And another topic related to this is the crisis of faith. The problem is acute even today, but we are not talking about the socio-philosophical component, it is important for me that Tolstoy is primarily a poet. And we want to move the viewer from the outer plane into the poetic reality. Not to retell the story that everyone already knows, but to talk about something else, deeper, about something that is even difficult to define in words. I would like the viewer to come and receive the elusive emotions that we crystallize, based on this plot, in the process of my co-creation and dialogue with the artists at rehearsals. What happens will be a performance.
