IN THE FISHING BOAT
The play premiered on November 14, 2019
Theater "Masterskaya", St. Petersburg
It is important that the characters are placed in simple human and historical conditions. The occupied Galilee of the first decades of the Christian era is a difficult environment. But only here, in conditions of total lack of freedom, could a person appear who forever changed the world, only here could a new morality based on compassion and love for one's neighbor be born. We tried to create our own artistic reality from images and meanings, in which ancient history could find a new life.
A very important part of our work is the soundtrack of the performance. It finally managed to bring together my favorite electronic sound (composer - my constant collaborator, Vladislav Krylov) - with a live sound. To achieve a special oriental flavor, an old instrument - oud - will sound live on stage. Andrey Didik will perform his original themes. First of all, the viewer is waiting for a deeply musical performance, saturated with different combinations of sounds and melodies.
Composing the visual part, I was inspired by Russian and Western medieval painting, from Bosch and Giotto to van der Weyden, Grunewald, Ivanov, Ge. I think it is difficult to find a better assistant than classical painting. I really hope that together with the plastic director Nikolai Kuglyant we managed to draw our own, lively and emotional pictures.
According to production designer Nikolai Slobodyanik, the spatial solution is conceived as illustrative as possible: on the stage there is a large five-meter fishing boat, inside and around which the stories of Galilean fishermen unfold. But this is precisely what our performance is dear to me, all its inner history, which crawls out of paintings and bookshelves into a theater, into a simple wooden boat, into poetry, into a text.
